In Maine, if you touch your phone while driving they can give you a $250 ticket for the first offense.
This is inconvenient if your phone is your gps, you use it to listen to music or someone calls you.
I can, however, touch my radio as much I want. So Oppo I ask you if you have any suggestions for a double din radio with Android Auto, that has the ability to control my 5th gen iPod classic and costs less than a ticket would?

I’d go with the Alpine, personally, it’s a bit more but I’d trust they’d be better/more durable than Boss.

Wow that’s strict in Georgia you can touch your phone if it is in a holder or dash mounted somehow. The rationale it’s not different than the radio.

Yeah it’s nuts. I’m not sure how str inge ntly it’ll be enforced but at $250 a pop I’m not interested in taking chances.

no, it only has one USB port, but you didn’t specify both at the same time.

looks like the Boss units are your only hope at your price point, then; since they’re the only ones with 2 USB ports and AA support. appears that one USB connection is dedicated to the phone (carplay/AA) and the other can use flash drives and iPods.
note that even though you can have both connected and working at the same time, you cannot control the USB drive/iPod via Android Auto or CarPlay. you will have to drop back to the head unit’s native UI to select and play music from the iPod.

Thats nuts. My radio won't let me input a phone number while the car's in motion, so I have to do it through the phone.

Carplay only supports playing audio from the connected iPhone so if you are running Waze on the head unit you are listening to the music on the phone, not the iPod.

Scooch case. It has a little strap thingie in the back you can cram into a vent or cd slot. I shoved my phone into the factory radio’s cd slit and it looks like i am fingeri ng a touchscreen.

False. My Sony radio has CarPlay, and I have no problems playing media from any other source while the screen is running a CarPlay app. But like I said above, I can’t initiate playback of any other source from within CarPlay, I have to drop to the radio's home screen, select the source, then go back to the home screen and bring up CarPlay again.

Interesting. My Corolla stops playing whatever you were listening to and switches to the phone when you open the CarPlay interface.

Hm. guessing the Toyota infotainment treats CarPlay as a discrete source instead of a mode.

CarPlay and USB audio appear to be the same thing in the Toyota system, you just can’t have anything other than USB audio with the CarPlay interface open.

Toyota apparently sucks.
or more likely Denso
Ten does; IIRC they’re Toyota’s main interior electronics supplier.

Hmm, that law seems a bit weird. Actual text of the law here: http://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/bills/bills_129th/chapters/PUBLIC486.asp
Some Q&A with a State Police Lieutenant:
Can I answer an incoming phone call on the highway?
You may answer a call as long as you use a hands-free option and don’t have to hold the phone to manipulate it. The new law under Title 29-A section 2121 prohibits you from holding any electronic device not necessary for the operation of the vehicle, unless specifically exempted. The Maine State Police say that any distraction that causes someone to fail to maintain control of their vehicle ( Title 29-A section 2118 ) is illegal from a previous law.
But I can have a phone conversation if I’m wearing a remote headset, or if my phone is somehow hooked up through my radio (via Bluetooth or USB)?
Correct, as long as you are over 18 and not operating under a permit or an intermediate driver’s license.
Do I need to purchase a dashboard mount if I place my phone in a dashboard cup holder?
You do not need to purchase any particular item to hold your phone or other electronic device. You may not hold it in your hand but the law doesn’t prescribe how it must be mounted if you’re using it for directions. You can have your phone in the cup holder if you choose.
What should I do if I’m using a GPS directions app and have to change my destination?
You can pull over to a safe location, put the vehicle in park and then enter the data.
Are there rules about where in the car I can mount the phone/device if I’m using it for directions or stereo purposes? Does it have to be on or level to the dashboard?
No, you can mount the phone anywhere as long as you don’t obstruct your view of the roadway when mounted.
Can I wear Bluetooth or remote headphones connected to my phone while I’m driving?
Yes.
If I’m listening to music or a podcast on my vehicle’s stereo system via my phone or device, can I touch the screen to skip to the next track?
Yes, as long as you are over 18 and not operating under a permit or an intermediate driver’s license.
Can I have a phone conversation while I’m driving if my phone is on speaker mode and sitting on the passenger seat next to me?
Yes. This is technically not a Bluetooth function, but if your phone’s speaker is capable enough to facilitate this, then it’s fine.
Can I turn on my hands-free feature while I’m driving?
Yes, and this one’s tricky but important. Per the new law, you may use your hand to activate or deactivate a feature or function of a mobile telephone or handheld electronic device that is in hands-free mode and mounted or affixed to the vehicle in a location that does not interfere with the operator’s view of the road if the feature or function activated requires only a single swipe, tap or push of the operator’s finger.
Can an officer give me a ticket if they see me touching my phone for any reason?
No, not exactly. According to the Maine State Police, they must “observe a violation of law.” From what we can understand, that means touching your phone to activate a hands-free mode (like Bluetooth) is okay, but pretty much any other reason is not.
So it seems there is some leeway to touch the device for handsfree/playback control, but not for navigation which is a bit odd.
Not much idea what your aftermarket options look like though, I just use a Grom bluetooth adapter for hands free calling which seems like it would work well enough combined with voice controls.

I think you are right on Toyota’s infotainment not being up to par with everyone else. It’s easily the weakest link of the Corolla.

But w hat if I don’t have park? :-P
That’s okay. I’m seriously old-school. My “GPS” is the DeLorne
Maine Gazetteer
stuffed in the pocket behind my passenger seat. It needs no satellite signal, though does need external lighting for night use. No traffic updates though.
